The 1920s

Quote of the day:

"There's a hell of a difference between wise-cracking and wit. Wit has truth in it; wise-cracking is just callisthenics with words." --Dorothy Parker

I've had a bit of an obsession lately with the 1920s and women writers then. I read *What Fresh Hell Is This*, a bio of Dorothy Parker, by Marion Meade and another book by the same author *Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin: Writers running wild in the twenties*. The second one has little vignettes about Dorothy Parker, Zelda Fitzgerald, Edna Ferber and Edna St. Vincent Millay. Now I'm in the middle of Savage Beauty, the Nancy Mitford biography of Millay. (I've had it for a few years--I bought it right when it came out in hardcover and still hadn't read it by the time the paperback came out. I hate it when I do that. I do it frequently.)

I don't know why I have this interest. I'd read a review of the Bobbed Hair book and wanted it, then realized I owned the Parker book by the same author and hadn't read it. So I made myself read it before buying the new one. I don't know how those people got anything done with all the drinking and smoking and partying and sleeping around. America seems to have gotten even more puritanical than the 1920s in some ways. That's a little scary. Not to say that there aren't alcoholic, partying writers now.

Anyway, I'm not sure what's going to come of this fascination. I'll guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Re: thank you

You should probably download semagic or one of the other LJ programs. It's easier to use than the interface on LJ, and you can click buttons on the toolbar to insert things like lj cuts. I think there is a link through LJ where they have all of the possible downloadable programs, or you can just google semagic.

To friend someone simply go to their user information. There will be a small toolbar on the page, click on the plus side and you will get an option to add the person to your friends list.

I made four more Veronica Mars icons last night, in honor of you getting an LJ, and because it gave me a nice excuse to play with Photoshop. You can have up to three icons with a paid account and you'll get the opportunity to choose which one you want to use for a given post or comment by selecting it from a drop down menu.
